Thimphu experienced its first snowfall
January 6, 2012- The capital city Thimphu experienced its first snowfall on January 2. The snowfall lasted for about half an hour. This was one of the earliest snowfalls in Thimphu in recent years.
- A group of youth on January 2 stabbed a nun and a monk in Phuentsholing. The nun is in the national referral hospital in Thimphu in a serious condition while the monk is recovering from a minor injury on the thigh. The assailants are still at large.
- A speeding truck rammed into a SUV car in Olakha, Thimphu, on January 2 damaging it completely. Eyewitnesses said the speeding truck lost control. There was no casualty.
- The joint sitting of Parliament will deliberate Public Finance (Amendment) Bill of Bhutan 2011 and Election (Amendment) Bill of Bhutan today. The 8th session of Parliament is underway in Thimphu.
- A detailed study conducted by the National Council has found that state funding of political parties is unnecessary, at least for now. The study was carried out to find out whether state funding is required for democracy to succeed in Bhutan.
- The 15th annual education conference, which was held from December 30 to January 1 in Gelephu, passed 33 resolutions.
- The eighth session of the Parliament began on January 4 with zhugdrel phuensum tshogpa. The 67 elected members of the Parliament and the five eminent members of the National Council took an oath of allegiance to His Majesty.
- The department of disaster management on January 4 received 2,050 dignity kits from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for the people affected by the tremors of September 18 last year. The kits were handed over to Home Minister Minjur Dorji by Queen Mother Ashi Sangay Choden Wangchuck.
