Ap Tsara Wai! If foreigners call Bhutan a poor country with rich people, it’s mainly because of an extravagant number of expensive BG SUVs that beam along our narrow roads all day long, everyday, everywhere. Despite the government’s faltering attempt at preventing the BG vehicles from running amok round the clock, they are like our stray dogs, everywhere – at hospitals, schools, vegetable... Wai! They say that giving in Buddhism is all about purity of intention. As long as one gives away something with good intention, there’s always a spiritual merit to it. However, this ancient belief is sorely tested today with more lazy and able-bodied lay people taking to alms begging for an easy livelihood. While the ancient wisdom may still hold true, it doesn’t make any sense to encourage... Read the story »

Wai! The many scourges of development are eating into our society more than ever today. These plagues and agues and maladies of many names ought sooner to be played up before the tainting begins to stifles the healthy growth of society. Wait now could be a wait too long. As change—rate of transition from one mode of being to other, physically, mentally, environmentally—come at dizzying alacrity,... Read the story »

Wai! What is a government? This is a simple, mundane and straightforward question at the face of it. But, what is the answer? Yes, it is act or process of governing, especially the control and administration of public policy in a political unit. It is also the office, function, or authority of a governing individual or body. In other words, it is the agency or apparatus through which a governing individual... Read the story »

Wai! Foreigners come to Bhutan and say it’s truly Shangri-la – the environment, culture, smiles, and everything. I think, it is, in many ways. Do I sound narcissistic like many of our friends? Yes, I know I do, and I have all the reasons to be so. Because of our middle path policy, we have managed to keep our social and cultural values largely intact. And our environment is as refreshing as it... Read the story »

Wai! The education ministry’s taking the concept of early childhood care and development to rural areas is highly commendable. The department of school education is planning to establish two early childhood care and development centres in each dzongkhag. It’s aimed at giving the rural children an opportunity to grow and develop in a stimulating and enabling environment. The education ministry’s... Read the story »

Wai! A National Council this week raised the issue of irresponsible parents and spoilt children. For any human society, it’s a disturbing issue to discuss. It is the story of a deeply ailing society. It’s unfortunate that we have to discuss as fundamental a human issue as the need for parents to take care of their children and children to respect their parents. But it’s an issue whose time... Wai! Democracy came to Bhutan with a lot of new concepts and ideas, most of them received or imported. Our people had difficulty coming to terms with the new system. They immediately related democracy with their received ideas about it. So they thought that it meant banner raising, road blocking, slogan shouting, and berating authorities as seen in our neighbourhood and beyond. A few years down... Read the story »

Wai! It’s heartening to see 70 of our religious figures come together in Thimphu for the annual dratshang conference. This time, the monastic body is discussing how our religious institutions and figures could help materialize the community outreach programme initiated by Dratshang Lhentshog. The programme includes, among others, teaching Dzongkha to our university graduates. It is a welcome initiative.... Read the story »
