Druknet goes wireless

January 25, 2011

Druknet will soon sell vouchers that will contain login information to access wireless internet services if the trial WiFi proves successful.

In order to give a value-added service to its broadband users, Druknet is planning to make the internet connection wireless for all its broadband users, which means broadband users will have access to the internet without being connected to a phone line.

Broadband users can use their passwords and usernames to access the WiFi internet without any additional charges.

Druknet is currently providing wireless network internet access in Thimphu. It started the service on trial from December 28, 2010.

Broadband users can use their passwords and usernames to access the WiFi internet within a radius of 1 km of the Bhutan Telecom office, and that is only if one has a clear line of sight to its tower.

If one is indoors, the range is limited to only 500 metres. Druknet intends to start covering major locations.

The WiFi installation is under process in Phuentsholing. The third town Druknet is considering for WiFi internet connection is Paro.

People using broadband internet are excited about the new service. “Now we can move around with a laptop and not necessarily be stuck at a point. Two of us can use the internet at the same time,” said Kesang Wangmo, a corporate employee.

General Manager of Druknet, Tshering Norbu, said that 1,000 users can use the internet concurrently, and this can be increased.

He said setting up Thimphu-wide WiFi would not be economical but justifiable. “That is why we want to select the clusters which have more potential users to make the service financially sustainable,” he said.

For those without broadband connections, Druknet is planning to sell prepaid vouchers for them to access WiFi. This will enable easy internet access, especially to international visitors on business trips or holiday, Tshering Norbu said.

Druknet has around 8,000 broadband users in the country spread across 40 locations.
