U-13 girls’ team to soon leave for AFC festival

10 March 2010

Bhutan’s under-13 girls team will leave for Sri Lanka on March 11 to participate in the AFC under-13 Girls’ Football Festival.

Upon the recommendation of school sports instructors, 22 players were selected for the team, 17 from Thimphu, two from Gasa and one each from Tashigang, Paro and Haa.

The players were selected after a month-long coaching camp in January. They practise in the morning and evening for one and half hours each.

Rinchen Dema, 13, a student at Damthang Lower Secondary School in Haa, said she was excited to play in a girl’s team.

“I have improved my skills a lot since the training started. I want to take up football as profession if possible and hopefully I will be in the national squad one day,’’ she said.

Dorji Dema, 12, from Bjishong Middle Secondary School, Gasa, said she enjoyed playing football in proper dress and boots. “Back home I used to play in kira bare footed. I am very much looking forward to flying in Druk Air and I am counting my days,” she said. She is currently staying with two other girls at the Changjiji Youth Hostel.

The festival aims to promote and raise the level of women’s football in the region. This is the first time that Bhutan’s Under-13 girls team is going abroad. The previous year Under-14 girls team attended a similar festival.

“The team has improved a lot. I would like to thank BFF, AFC, BOC and FIFA for organizing such event. I hope the team will represent our country well and the girls will enjoy the opportunity of travelling to new places,’’ said Bumchu, the team manager.

Kota, the Head Coach, said the festival will help promote women’s football in the country. “The girls will get exposure which will be great deal of help to them and they will in turn influence other kids back home.”
