Hunt for top 10 archers

23 February 2010

The national game will assume a different dimension with the start of Top Ten Archery Tournament on March 1 at the Changlingmithang archery range in Thimphu.

The tournament on compound bows and arrows will pit the country’s best archers against one another. There is no teamwork. The archers will compete for the top 10 positions in the country individually.

In the first round, the tournament will see all the registered archers grouped into pools of 10 according to their registration numbers. Each group will play 21 rounds, which will be evaluated. After evaluation, top players from different pools will be selected for the top 100 match.

In the second round, archers selected for the top 100 match will be arranged by fair rank mixings into 10 pools 10 participants.

In the final, top ten archers will play 25 rounds to be evaluated and ranked. Based on the ranks, various attractive prizes will be awarded.

The rules and regulations for the tournament will be set by the organizer based on Yangphel and Bhutan Archery Federation rules and regulations.

According to the organizer, who is an enthusiastic archer himself, the main purpose for organizing the tournament is to unearth the best archers in the kingdom, to keep archers mentally and physically fit and to promote the national game. He said the tournament will be a platform for individuals to show their courage, talent, patience, concentration and other physical and mental abilities.

He hopes that the competition will be a success. He is planning to make the tournament annual event.

According to Jurmi Wangdi, Assistant Secretary General of Bhutan Archery Federation (Traditional Archery), the initiative taken by Kinley Penjor is encouraging and interesting. He said this will encourage many more people to take up the national game. “This, in a way, will boost the popularity of the game. The federation fully supports and encourages the tournament,” he said.

Registration will be open until February 27. Each participant has to pay an entry fee of Nu 1,000.
