31 January 2010
The under-16 football coaching camp at Sarpang, which started from January 8, ends today. The camp was organized to select players for under-16 football team.
Organized by Bhutan Football Federation (BFF) with the assistance from Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and Asian Football Confederation (AFC), about 220 students from around the country attended the camp.
The coaching was conducted in two sessions, drill and trainings in the mornings and game in the evenings. From 220 students, 30 have been selected to form the under-16 team. Out of 30 students, 22 students will be selected by the selection committee. They will be provided accommodation at the hostel at Changiji youth and schooling in Thimphu.
They will be trained to represent the country in the under- 16 championships in the Asian region in 2011 while the remaining 8 students will be in standby if anything happens to the selected ones.
They will also be participating in the higher age level in the coming years in various tournaments, and chances are that they could even get selected for the national team in future, according to Kinley Dorji, coordinator of the coaching camp. Chimi Dorji, the skipper, said he got the opportunity to learn more skills and tactics. He was happy to meet new friends. He hopes that he will be selected to stay in the youth hostel.
One of the goalkeepers, Thinley Penjor, said it was a productive way to spend the winter holidays. He said all the participants improved each day under the guidance of the coaches, who are internationally trained. “Performance and skills of this batch are far better than that of previous years’. The improvement in the kids is due to the coaches, who have received training and coaching outside the country,” said Dorji Khandu, one of the coaches. The camp was also aimed at developing football and keeping students engaged during the holidays.
