Wildcard re-entry in Druk Star

12 March 2010

The Druk Star show has reached the top 10 stage. Deki Choden and Dophu were eliminated last week.

Out of the 10 contestants, six are men and four, women. While five of them are students, one is a school dropout, two farmers, one housewife and another, a teacher.

In addition to the top 10 singers, an eliminated contestant will be brought back into the show through wildcard re-entry.

Public votes will decide who will be brought back into the show from the four eliminated contestants nominated by the judges.

The judges have nominated Deki Choden, Sonam Choden, Gyem Dorji and Nim Dorji for the wildcard re-entry.

Talking to Bhutan Observer, many contestants said their journey to top 10 had been difficult while others said they did not even dream of reaching top 10.

“Igot into danger zone four times but Ifinally made it,” said Dorji Penjor, 23, who got Voice of the Week title once. He had not expected to reach top 10 when Druk Star started.

“Idid hope to reach top 10 but when Igot into danger zone once, Ithought my dreams were scattered,” said Tandin Gyem, 21, who was also voted the Voice of the Week once.

Likewise, contestants who were never relegated to danger zone did not think they would make it to top 10 either.

Jampel Yangzom, 19, said she did not expect to reach the top 10 stage because the competition depended, to a large extent, on public votes.

Chencho Norbu, 34, a teacher in Paro, said until now he had been traveling from Paro to practise in Thimphu because he did not want to miss his classes.

Now that he has reached top 10, he has taken leave as he has to travel to nearby dzongkhags for live public performance. He, however, was always confident of reaching top 10.

While the contestants have reached top 10, none of them are confident of becoming the Voice of Druk-yul. “Iam trying my best but Ican never say because it will depend on our voters,” said Tshering Dorji, 22, who was last week’s Voice of the Week.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the top 10 contestants of Druk Star performed live in Paro. They will also be performing in Wangdue and Phuentsholing.
