The lens master

He is the master of the lens. The frames, shutter, aperture, and lighting are at his command. The visual treat in a film depends on him. He is cameraman Tshering Samdrup.
He had his tryst with the camera in 2003 when he started his career in the film industry as a crew member. Today, 23-year-old Tshering Samdrup has become a professional cameraman. He is currently filming his second movie, Sarim Jarim.
While working as an assistant cameraman, Tshering got an opportunity to do a diploma in camera and lighting from Delhi, India. After returning from Delhi, he filmed his first movie, Chasing Bride, which received accolades. Subsequently, he got a second offer.
Tshering had always been interested in filmmaking. Therefore, after completing class XII, he started pursuing his field of interest. His long-term plan is to do editing and directing.
Working as a cameraman has not been as easy as he expected. “Camera handling is difficult and complicated, and during my first film, Iwas not fully confident, but now Iam,” said Tshering Samdrup. “Alot of hard work is required to be a cameraman.”
He said that because cameramen are behind the scene, besides producers and directors, viewers do not appreciate their work. “People don’t even know us but the quality of the film depends on us.” Tshering said there are people who discourage the profession he has chosen.
However, he believes that, since there are not many cameramen in the Bhutanese film industry today, his future is bright.
From Samdrup Jongkhar, Tshering Samdrup said there is a lot to be explored in the film industry.
He is thankful to his sister and Chencho Dorji, a senior cameraman, who paved the road for him and still guides him. Tshering said he is working hard and is doing his best to make everyone proud.
