Bird flu under control
5 March 2010
The recent outbreak of bird flu in Rinchending, Phuentsholing, is now under control, according to officials from the livestock department.
The Department of Livestock and Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority are successfully carrying out the decontamination, depopulation and disinfection (3D) in Samdrup Jongkhar, Samtse, Gelephu, Sarpang and Phuentsholing.
Until March 1, veterinarians depopulated or culled 1,119 birds, disposed of 250 eggs, 140 coops and 16 baskets.
Fifty percent of compensations amounting to Nu 115,376 for 795 birds, 157 eggs and 92 coops were paid. The remaining compensations were paid yesterday.
The compensations were calculated on 75 percent of the market value.
Four doctors from Veterinary Vigilance Team are leading other members in four southern regions to curb the spread of the disease.
Bird flu was found in eight birds in Rinchending and three birds in Pasakha after which the 3D was carried out.
Veterinarians have identified 12 spots for burial of the culled birds, which will be fenced and observed for a minimum of three years.
The 3D team and a surveillance team are confined within the radius of three km and seven km from the epicentre of disease for 21 days to prevent the spread of flu.
Meanwhile, the local poultry products from the affected areas are not allowed to be sold in the market but the products from other parts are.

> In the 2nd para of your report it was mentioned “The Department of Livestock and Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority are successfully carrying out the decontamination, depopulation and disinfection (3D) in Samdrup Jongkhar, Samtse, Gelephu, Sarpang and Phuentsholing”.
> The 3D program have been carried in the infected areas (P/ling and Pasakha areas) and NOT in S Jongkhar, Samtse, Gelephu and Sarpang. Only clinical and sero surveillance are being carried out in those risk areas- S Jongkhar, Samtse, Gelephu and Sarpang
