Bhutanese students won’t be affected
5 February 2010
Derecognizing of 44 deemed universities in India will not affect Bhutanese students studying under those universities, according to Karma Yeshey, Director of Department of Adult and Higher Education (DAHE).
Forty-four deemed universities in India were found to have undesirable management structure, violated the principles and guidelines of teaching and research, introduced thoughtless programmes, no commitment towards research, increased intake capacity disproportionately and had higher fee structure than prescribed. Therefore, they were recently derecognized.
Director Karma Yeshey said it will affect only the institutes, not the students. “These universities are stripped from the list of deemed universities but not the students studying under them. The students will continue their studies and will be given their degree certificates after completing their studies by the affiliated university,” he said.
Youth Development Fund scholarship for 2010 academic session has been awarded in one of the derecognized universities. “We are waiting for reply to change the institute for the scholarship,” said Jigme Thinley, the programme coordinator.
DAHE says it cannot find out the exact number of Bhutanese students pursuing courses under derecognized universities because the students have not recorded the name of universities under which they are studying with the department.
In total, 4,112 students including government and private scholarship students are studying in different universities in India.
DAHE recognizes colleges under University Grants Commission and All India Council for Technical Education.
There are126 deemed universities in India. While 38 deemed universities were found to be doing a good job, 44 others have been given three years to improve.

I am doing my masters from one of the college. The college will be providing us with the state certificate and nothing else has changed. I am personally not very worried about it.
Am doing my BE in one of these universities n everything here is normal. We have around 34 colleges under this university and probably it may be the first in Indian History that it has its colleges even in overseas performing better than any other govt universities and also it is one of the oldest university. I dont know may be UGC authorities have their own justification.
