Air-conditioned market shed for farmers
30 July 2010
A new air-conditioned farmers’ market is under construction in Trashigang town at the old market shed on the banks of Mithimdrang. It is expected to meet the increasing demand for farmers’ sales counters.
The need for a better market shed with improved storage facilities was felt due to the increasing volume of farm produce from the many farmers’ cooperatives in the dzongkhag.
According to the dzongkhag livestock officer, Dr Tshering Dorji, the farming practice in the villages is undergoing a rapid change leading to increased production of livestock and agriculture produce. Therefore, a standard market shed is essential.
The market shed will house two meat shops on the ground floor, which will have seekam making facilities.
The town currently has only one meat shop on government land.
The top floor, which will have milk preserving facilities, will provide space for sale of dairy products.
There will also be a counter for Brokpa zhitpa.
The dzongkhag agriculture officer, Dhendup Dukpa, said that, after the completion of the shed, farmers will be allowed to sell and buy products only from there.
The old market shed was left unused as it was far from the town. Farmers could not sell their products because people bought them from roadside sellers near the town.
After the municipal authorities disallowed farmers from selling their products by the roadside, they started using the premises of Trashigang General Hospital.
The dzongkhag has taken the initiative to construct the new shed since no private individual has the resources, especially land and capital, for investment. The dzongkhag administration was the only agency with the capacity to build the shed, said Dr Tshering Dorji.
The municipal office will use the budget allocated for the construction of a parking area for the construction of the shed.
