Dear Tek Bahadur.

When you say "Keep away from drugs" it is like sayig "Keep away from the commn cold". Punishments for dealers will not help either. They sell not for profit but to sustain their addiction. Have you seen the withdrawal symtoms when one does not get the drug of their choice? The only answer is drugs and alcohol abuse education. God. Look at how steeped in alcohol culture in Bhutan is. Someone dies, take a case of Hit. Someone marries, do the same. I'm sure alcohol must have been flowing like water at this kid's funeral...Soon we will have High School cum Bar....

I am one of the volunteers, a recovering alcoholic who is trying his best to counsel young and middle aged people to give addiction up completely. It looks like an impossible war to win but we are winning battles. There have been some hopeless cases of guys and girls who have hit rockbottom, sleeping in the streets begging for a few ngultrums just to get a peg of the cheapest drink or drug, who are now clean and sober and actually working or continuing their studies. These recovering guys and girls further try to bring in other users and drunkards into recovery. Sometimes the recovering guys relapse. But most come back, However many times you may fall, you can always stand up again and at least in Thimphu, at present, there are many to help.

Please either come to the Conference Room of the hospital psychiatric ward on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday at 6 PM. Or go to the Drop In Centre (DIC) anytime located opposite Truck parking. This advice is not only for the addicts and alcoholics who wish to stop but cannot stop, but also to friends and relatives who wish to intervene and help them in some manner so that they don't end up as just a new article in a newspaper like this story....

A recovering alcoholic who looks back upon the life he led where health, finance and relationships suffered so much that he wishes this disease to disappear from present users....forever

It is so sad to hear that drug abuse is on high alert in Thimphu. How he had felt when he came to see that his son is dying with drug over dose? But it has been too late for him to have an eye on his daily activities.

It is therefore, the responsibility of every parents to see and notice what their grown up children are doing around in the town. Refrain them from being addicted to drugs and substance abuse and avoid them with bad companies. Otherwise, it would be like the same fate of a father who has beed handed him a dead son.
