Fourth Druk Gyalpo visits quake-affected areas

His Majesty the fourth Druk Gyalpo left for the earthquake affected areas in the eastern dzongkhags yesterday.

According to the office of the Gyalpoi Zimpoen, His Majesty will tour the dzong­khags to meet the people affected by last year’s earth­quakes. His Majesty is accom­panied by their Majesties the Queen Mothers and the mem­bers of the royal family.

Bhutan was hit by two ma­jor earthquakes last year. On September 21, an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale hit Bhutan claiming 11 lives and destroying 4,000 homes in the eastern part of the country. Another earth­quake, measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, struck the re­gion on December 31 destroy­ing more than 700 houses.
