Zhongar 11 reaches Druk Wangyel final

Zhongar 11 defeated Druk 11,000 to reach the final of Druk Wangyal Archery Tournament at Changlingmithang yesterday.

The match saw frequent kareys from both teams but Zhongar 11 won the first game 25-14. The game continued, and Zhongar 11 again took the lead and sealed their place in the final 25-4.

The match saw spectators all ages but majority of them were elderly men. Ap Sha Bodhi, 87, who claimed to have been an attendant of third Druk Gyalpo and the best archer of his time with an average karey of 17 to 25 in a day, said he really enjoyed watching the game played both on traditional and compound bows.

He said although he found matches on compound bows entertaining, he preferred matches on traditional bows as he grew up watching matches on the traditional equipment.

Ap Jagar, 73, echoed Ap Sha’s view. He said that people were more into compound bows nowadays. According to him, one needed more skill to play on traditional bows.

“The game also, in a way, classifies people of different income groups. Usually people who use compound bows are well-off whereas those who use traditional bows usually come from lower income Zhongar 11 reaches Druk Wangyel finalgroup,” said Ap Jagar.

At present, compound bows have gained more popularity than traditional bows but the archery federation is doing everything to improve the game. According to Jurmi Wangdi, Assistant General Secretary of the archery federation, the entry fee for tournaments on traditional bows is half the entry fee of compound bow tournaments.

“There are attractive prizes and trips abroad to attend traditional archery festival for the best archers on traditional bows,” he added. The second semi-final will be played between SJP Enterprise and PCAL on December 12. The final will be played on December 18.
