Inter-college football tournament kicks off
19 December 2009
The inter-college football tournament kicked off on December 16 at the Paro College of Education. Gedu Business College beat Paro College of Education 1-0.
The first women’s match was played between Sherubtse College and Royal Institute of Health Sciences. Both the teams could not find the net, and the match ended in a goalless draw. In the third match of the day, Samtse College of Education defeated College of Science and Technology 2-1.
“The tournament is interesting as all the teams seem equally good, but since there are only a few spectators, it is a little dry,” said a student of Sherubtse College. Sonam Peljor from Sherubtse College said that there was a need for a separate ground for practice.
“The tournament should be held in summer, or else, in a warmer place,” he added.
Rongthong Sangay, Sports Director of Sherubtse College, said the tournament that brings all colleges together would help players interact among themselves and gain experience.
Ten men’s teams and six women’s teams are participating in the tournament. With the theme “stronger and healthier Bhutan’’, the league-cum-knockout tournament is organized and sponsored by RUSoB (Royal University Sports Federation of Bhutan)and the business community, among others.
Bhutan Football Federation provided the kits and helped in hiring match officials. The 11-day tournament will end with the final on December 26.
