Boosting volleyball in the country

15 December 2009

Volleyball may have lost popularity, but it has not vanished. The Bhutan Volleyball Federation is planning to take all necessary steps to give the game a much-needed boost and bring back its popularity.
As a first step, the federation has already started training school sports instructors in the game. On December 25, all school sports instructors will again be trained by foreign coaches at Paro College of Education, said Ugyen Lhendup, General Secretary of the federation.
According to him, they would select outstanding players during regional and national school meets to undergo coaching camps during holidays either as players or as coaches. “This will serve as an influence and exposure to their fellow students in the school,” he said.
The federation has subsubmitted a proposal to Bhutan Olympic Committee for the construction of a new permanent and standard volleyball court in Thimphu. “This will help organize frequent tournaments and boost the game,” said Ugyen Lhendup. He added that the federation has been helping people organize volleyball events by providing nets, balls and other kits.
There are also plans to start club system volleyball like in football in the near future. “We want to encourage people to come up with teams and register so that the game will always be played and featured,” said Ugyen Lhendup.
The federation also plans to introduce beach volleyball and mini-ball. “Beach volleyball is feasible even without beach,” said Ugyen Lhendup. Mini-ball is a volleyball game but it is smaller in terms of width and length of the court and height of the net. “The game will focus on children between the ages of nine and 13 who find it difficult to play in normal court,” he said.
Women would also be encouraged in the game. According to Ugyen Lhendup, women participation is poor. “Once during an open competition, only two women’s team registered. So we had to cancel the women’s contest,” he said.

Sir,we are happy to go through your opinion which you are planning to take necessary steps to give the game much importance,in this matter, this is sort of our suggestion/request that if such aspiration can be taken into practice effectively that would be far far better.
    Thanks.
