The women’s final and semi-finals of Thimphu Open Tennis Championship will be played today and tomorrow at the Changlingmithang tennis court.
Sponsored by Cosco India Limited, the nine-day tournament saw more than 60 adult and youth participants. The tournament comprised seven different events including men’s singles, women’s singles, senior singles (above 45 years), gentlemen singles (above 55 years), lucky mixed doubles, under-18 boys’ singles and under-18 girls’ singles.
While the youngest player was 11 years old, the oldest was more than 70 years old. The winner and runners-up will take away a trophy each. A rolling trophy will also be given away.
Ngawang Phuntsho, the general secretary of Bhutan Tennis Federation, said that more tournaments mean more avenues to groom upcoming players. “We are thankful to Bhutan Sports and Cosco for organising this tournament because it gives opportunities to the youth,” he said.
The International Tennis Federation tournament rules and regulations are followed throughout the matches. For adults, best of three matches are played with tie-breaker while for juniors, best of 17 games with tie-breakers are played.
Birendra Basnet, the managing director of Bhutan Sports Association, said the main purpose of the tournament was to promote sports for the youth and to keep players engaged during the idle season. The tournament will be made an annual event.
“It is to keep the game spirit alive in youth by providing more opportunities,” said Birendra Basnet, who is also the proprietor of Bhutan Sports Goods Co., the sole distributor of Cosco brand in Bhutan and one of the sponsors of the tournament.
Incentives for umpires and line judges, T-shirts and caps for ball boys and girls, racquet strings, 25 numbers of grips and expenses for refreshments, banners and balls for the tournament are borne by Cosco.
The finals of men’s singles will be played on November 1 at 9 am.
