First Bhutanese to run world-class marathon
24 August 2009
Rinzin Dorji, 34, a tourist guide, is representing Bhutan in the marathon going to be held in New York on November 1. He will be the first Bhutanese to run alongside international runners from all across the world.
Rinzin worked for Amankora, Paro, from 2004 to May this year. He quit his job to participate in the marathon because he feels that it is a lifetime opportunity for him.
His passion to run was identified by a tourist named Ynaar on his visit to Bhutan. Ynaar is one of the active members of New York Road Runner (NYRR), the organisers of the marathon.
Rinzin and Ynaar used to jog every morning when Ynaar was in Bhutan. If they had time, they ran for 15 to 20 km. Ynaar told Rinzin that, if he ran at the same speed, he would qualify for the NYRR provided that he did some training.
Rinzin left for New York in May on invitation from Ynaar. In New York, he had to undergo test runs – a 5-km run for three times and a 10-km run for two times – to qualify for the marathon.
After qualifying for the marathon, Rinzin has been undergoing training with Ynaar. He goes to gym everyday and trains for seven hours a day. While he runs in the morning from 7 am to 10 am, in the evening he does cycling and swimming from 4 pm to 8 pm.
Thuken Jamtsho, a coach from Bhutan, also helped Rinzin for a few days. On September 7, he will be flying to Columbia. Rinzin’s participation in the marathon and training are sponsored by Ynaar and other western friends.
Rinzin said, “I feel proud to represent our country for the first time and I feel honoured for having this opportunity.”
The marathon run is organized for charity that will benefit all the people living there.
After the run, Rinzin wants to come back home and practise for next year’s event. He wishes to raise funds for charities in Bhutan.
Rinzin is from Pam village in Trashigang.

Why does it need americans to recognise such talent and sponsor such a person? Why can’t we bhutanese come forward to encourage such talents? DPT Government, please do something to recognise and encourage such talents of our youths who will make us proud to be Bhutanese.
Best of luck Rinzin. We are proud to have you bearing the name “Bhutan” during the run.
It will be a long time before we Bhutanese can proudly say we ARE an INDEPENDENT NATION……….because we depend on foreign aids to build our bridges, we depend on India to build our hospitals, we depend on WHO to feed our school childrens, we depend on foreign scholarships to send our students for further studies, we depend on foreigners to sponsor our mountaineers to climb the Everest, we depend on foreigners to sponsor our runners, and we EVEN have to depend on foreign aids for our disaster relief efforts. Our PM is on his way to Japan to ask for some more money to rebuild the country after last May’s flood. I think it is high time we do not talk about GNH and do something productive to make our country stand on its own feet.

Dont you know that BOC is very aware of mr. rinzin.what BOC hve to do rather than support him.
Rinzin, all my warm wishes and prayersare with you.try rinzin try.
I am sad n i feel sorry Mr. Tok but i have to tell you.
Let me clarify that Mr. Rinzin got sponsor coz he have capable, he is NOT nominated by BOC. rather you being Bhutanese YOU have to appreciated Mr. Rinzin. You have to support.
when i got this news even i couldn’t believe. i have my friend there in New York he is happy to informed me that its true Mr. Rinzin is participating in this Nov. marathon. He might have cross check with marathon office.
Please TOK or tuk better be careful.
It clearly shows THAT you r nothing but piece of SHIT.
FOR YOUR KIND INFORMATION, Mr. Rinzin is here coz he have capable and i sponsor him.
YOU have no idea what you are writing, Please if you think you can do it go for it. WHO IS HOLDING YOU.
NO TALK, ACTION.
mr. tok,
please don’t bull shit, STOP this.
what makes you lie. we have never seen Mr. Rinzin advertising here in New York.
Please be honest. our life is impermanent, we never no what will happen tomorrow.
if you can’t do good, please never harm other.
we all know that he is taking part in nov. event. why YOU are JEALOUS.
DON’T DISTURB HIM.U MAD MAN
Hey Tok,
DONT bull shit, be careful what you write. we are not FOOL like you.
you have to wake up, you crazy man.
if you have zazau show us like Mr. Rinzin, at list he is here for good cost.
n one thing i have never seen rinzin advertising, PLease don’t misinform.
have you ever study LAW, there is also THRIM for misinforming.
Mr. Tok be careful.
Whether or not this deserves to be a part of the headline news, I certainly have my reservations on this subject. I have been following both sides of this story with great caution before I could pass my judgement.
1. This is a pure irresponsible journalism. You cannot just write for the sake of writing, pass through the spell check, and then just publish the next day. There should be a reality check. The person who covered this story did not have a clue why this is a news at all. The management of the BO cannot let every tom, dick, and harry to write nonsense and loose your crediblity. Remember your sustainability is dependent on your credibility. How is it possible for this person represent Bhutan in the first place? Eshori Gurung, show us you got more never endings in your brain than in your guts! Mr. Rinzin on his part cannot claim that he is here to represent Bhutan because neither he is a marathon champion in Bhutan nor is he sent by the Bhutanse Olympic Committee (BOC). I know every year there is Thimphu Open Marathon. Why can’t BOC send those true champions to represent Bhutan instead?
2. This has set a bad precedence for the future of sports in Bhutan. There are so many young Bhutanese working-hard and aspiring to become world-class athletes trained by a professional coach. It is not worth sweating if BOC nominates athletes together with an un-certified coach to represent Bhutan based on personal relations. And what BOC fails to understand is sending third-class athletes based on personal relations is a disgrace for the whole nation.
3. Finally, to Mr. Ynaar, you are an insult to Bhutan. When you are able to sponsor a guy who is not even good enough to cover your own backyard, you should use your head (not your heart) that he is not at all fit to run the world-class marathon. What was your selection criteria that made think he can compete in the world-class marathon? Did you consult the sports governing body in Bhutan such as BOC? Did you avail permission or certification from BOC?
I am not offended though, i just didn’t know whether you expected me to reply.
Let me clarify about Marathon. This is open to all. any body could register if there are interested. But you have to get thro.
THIS IS FOR THE COST AFTER ALL.
Regarding Mr. Rinzin Rinzin, i know him more then you do. You don’t really have to explain about him.
If you are not Happy with my idea, i promise YOU we will not mention Bhutan. I respect BHUTAN. I LOVE BHUTAN.
Please never and ever mention THAT i am insulting. I have never done anything that harm you.
Many thanks for the suggestion.
WE DON’T NEED PUBLICITY, PLEASE STOP THIS.
let me introduce my self briefly, i m Phub, i m ex. army officer. i never want to write but i have to after i read this useless article so called 7 train track runner.
before u write any thing u should think carefully. get the facts. you have got no right to insult Mr. Ynaar. he have done nothing that disgrace or insult our mother land. SHAME ON YOU. rather you should appreciate him.
BY THE WAY who is the guy, who can’t run or cover back yard, if i m not wrong may be YOU.
if you think you are professional runner go for it, who is holding you.
log on to web. n get register. if you have any respectability about him, you should refrain from such cheap digs. i decided that you wasn’t some one with whom i should engage in debate. you wasn’t some one with any substance and to continue to respond to you would have been a waste of time.
dasho phub,
i m happy that u support this. i fully agree on you.
Hi There,
To be honest you guys are till far backyard.
This is 21st century.
i didn’t found any reason to disgrace sponsor and Mr. Rinzin. They are there for good reason. Mr. Rinzin is not running for Olympic but for WORLD charity. and this opportunity is given every once a year. Worlds take part in this event for the cost. He is running for the cost guys, rather you should appreciate him.
If you think you are good runner, if you interested go there and take part. we will be happy.
i am teacher and i am sport lady too.
i want to make short note in this.
please don’t write bad comment for no reason. we are BHUTANESE, and we are BUDDIST. We have got no reason to disgrace Sponsor. you people are showing very bad reputation.
please don’t be jealous.
if you think you are capable go for it.
we will be happy to see you there.
PLEASE PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU WRITE COMMENT.
I am Teacher,
I know there are lots n lots of runner in Bhutan but non of them found taking part in international level. When somebody taking part don’t be jealous.
If they think they are professional, they should not wait for BOC to sponsor but they have to find the ways, look for sponsor. Like Mr. Rinzin, he is not running for NAME but for cost.
Lots of my students are big fun of Mr. Rinzin Rinzin. Some even started to do jogging.
Its good that Mr. Rinzin Rinzin is taking part in this big event. I am very happy.
From me n my family big complement to Mr. Ynaar and Mr. Rinzin.
Thanking you Mr. Ynaar, you are Great man with very good heart.
run rinzin run….make us proud,,,,,we wish u would complete the race….good luck..
I am sorry to write this but he will not be the first bhutanese to run an international marathon, Sangay Wangchuk has already run the IAAF athletic meet marathon in Berlin this year. He completed and beat most Asians and sone Africans
I am sorry to say that Rinzin will not be the first Bhutanese to run an international marathon.
Sangay Wangchuk has already run the IAAF international athletic meet marathon in Berlin this year, in fact he completed and also beat most Asians and some Africans
Congrates Rinzin…….best of luck. We have so many talented guys like u in our country but our rnment is not in the position to give us the platform. Government usually talk about youth engaged in anti social activities, i guess if govt can give platform to the nation then there is no question of worrying about the youth………..BOC is not bad in receiving the fund both from govt and international donnar as well but that fund is used only to pay for the travelling exp of the BOC staff……………………………..i am sory to say that but that is true.
oh! very proud of you. Please go ahead and BEST OF LUCK.
hey,
You , train track runner. Do you know what is sponsoring? andhow much does it cost someone to give away something for free.
I think you are going nuts, how can you say that Mr Ynaar is an insult. I think you are a big insult to Bhutan.
What is wrong in him helping someone to make his dream come true. It is not BOC or the goverment who only has the right to hold someones rights. I dont see any substance in your writing.
Please better careful when you write next time we don’t want to see comments whihc are silly and unworthy like yours.
For Mr. Ynaar and Mr Rinzin, best of luck.

hey! Everybody……… Lets keep our fingers crossed for the moment and wish our dear Rinzin to bring some name and fame mena.
All the best and keep going tubga Mr Rinzin and if at all u succed then u hab suitably proved “what u can do for ur country”. The former i.e. “what ur country can do for u” will be taken care of on ur arrival here.
Dear Mr Ynaar,
my appology to you on behalf of,comments made by 7 Train Track Runner.
Thank you Mr Yannr for your support for helping Mr Rinzin from Bhutan.
Rinzin i wish you a Good Luck and God Blesss You 7 Train Track Runner.
hi rinzin,
i am sorry to tell you this..you know what at first i thought you are just fooling people coz i saw you in NY but i now really believe that you can do it, i am really proud of you and if i can make it i will be there on sunday to see you do it
all the best and my prayers are with you
Rinzin u took part in the marathon and we bhutanese people know that and I was there to support you on sunday waiting for u at the center park…..manhattan NYC….and I guess you reached the ending point not before 15000 runners… But still you did it good….but may I ask you one question…? How come you got a medel in this marathon and I was shocked to see ur picture with medal in kuenselonline, r u really sure that organizer award you with this medal…? How come they only award you with the medel why not all that 15000 participants came to the ending point before….? I hope you didn’t buy a fake medal, if it is like that than it will be a fullstop for your future ….never try to cheat urself Rinzin….you are a Bhutanese and be like a Bhutanese good day
Hello Kuk Kuk. Medal is given for those who made it on or before 2:30pm and he made it on time. I was there to show respect for him as he is the first Bhutanese ING nyc marathon runner who made Bhutanese flag fly high among hundreds of other countries and saw him making on time. More than medal he did Bhutan proud. I am curious what in the world makes you say “never cheat yourself” Jealous??????
KUK KUK, be careful, u r FOOL thats way u wanted to fool other.
The good man will never lie you should learnt this.
WHY YOU R SO JEALOUS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HAVE YOU EVER RUN 1 KM
Running 43km among 40,000 for the Nation is something. He even completed on Pro Run time. Get the fact man.
Regarding medal visit http://www.nyrr.org
we where their when he received medal n certificates in centre park.
If you r SON OF PELDEN DRUKPA , the true Bhutanese never write false information.
Rinzin you make us proud Bhutanese.
U R GREAT.
Tshewang, n Bhutanese Family in New York.
first of all congrats for being first to run the marathon….. tanks to Mr Rinzin for making we the bhutanese proud to the world …….. i may not be the runner but still i can feel how it would hav felt for being the first bhutanese to run marathon..we r proud of you……. Trashi delek
tok tok is totally insane, jealous and proving himself as one of ATSARA in New York.
I think, we should appoint him as “ATSARA OF NEW YORK”. I don’t know whats really bugging him about Bhutanese runner. A medal awarded to Rinzin by NYRR is a BIG slap for tok tok. If you check his right cheek closely, you might see NYRR imprints very clearly.
Dr. Mihai, thank you for sponsoring Mr. Rinzin to participate in NYRR 2009.
Your generosity will always be remembered.
Big Congratulation.
HUG.
we r proud of you…………………..So keep it up la…………………
GREAT JOB……..
i like this.
