Bumthang’s first basketball tournament

The first open coronation basketball league tournament in Bumthang is in full swing these days.

Organised by Amankora, the tournament is held at Wangdichholing Lower Secondary School. Three women’s teams and eight men’s teams are participating in the tournament. The men’s teams include Zhidae, Chumey Middle Secondary School, Acid, Wandgichholing Lower Secondary School 1 and 2, Shangrila, Regional Centre (RC) Jakar and Chumey Vocational Training Institute (VTI) while the women’s team include Wangling girls, Chumey Middle Secondary School and the Acid.

Tshewang Norbu, the manager of Amankora, said, “If this tournament is successful we will make it an annual event and have more dzongkhags participating next year.” Except for participating schools which paid Nu 2000 entry fee, the other participating teams paid Nu 2500.

The finals will be played on June 2, coinciding with the coronation day of the fourth Druk Gyalpo and the social forestry day. Winners and the runners-up will be awarded cash prizes The tournament was organised to create awareness amongst the youth against disease like Aids.

Tshetem Phuntsho, one the co-ordinators of the tournament, said they also wanted to promote social forestry day.

She added that since the mid-term examinations are around, there were less teams participating from schools. “We hope to have more teams participating next year.”

    its great to know that in bhumthang is having a basketball match so same as bhumthang we wud like to hav in mongar so if somebody conduct i would be much better
