Gomtu archery to begin

30 January 2009

The annual Penden Foundation Archery Cup organised by Penden Cement Authority will start from February 5, 2009, in Gomtu, Samtse. It is a compound bow tournament with teams participating from all over the country.

The first match will be played between Lhaki Group of Companies and Penden Cement Authority.

The participants from the winning team will take away a 12 inches tall statue of Jamyang each. Organiser of the tournament, Kinzang Dorji, said, “We have the ageold tradition of giving away statues as prizes since our Managing Director thinks it is better.” 11 teams have registered so far: one team from Thimphu, one team from Paro, two teams from Phuentsholing and the rest are from Samtse. The entry fee is Nu 6000 per team.

There were 11 teams participating last year too. Druk United of Lhaki Group of Companies, who participated for the first time, emerged the winner. Druk United was formed by three people. Dasho Kinlay P Dorji, one of the founding members, said, “This year we have a better set of players compared to that of last year and we are hopeful of winning this year too.”

This tournament resumed in 2004 after it was temporarily stopped during the 1990’s due to security problems in the south.
