Basketball final today

30 January 2009

The final of a six-day under- 17 basketball training and tournament held at the swimming pool complex in Thimphu is underway today.

Students, including some studying in India have been undergoing the training and tournament since January 25. Of 58 participants, 15 are girls. The participants formed 9 teams. Four matches have been played everyday.

“This training and tournament is to promote basketball. This will keep the children busy during the holidays and will also be educational,” said Tenzin Jamtsho, the National Basketball Coach.

He said that the participants will be given certificates and the winners of the tournament will be awarded some prizes.

Sonam, a participant, said she is enjoying the tournament. She said that she is using her holidays productively rather than wasting her time at home.

This tournament is an annual programme funded by the government. This is the third consecutive year the programme has been held.
