CST receives 30 European scholarships

27 December 2009

The College of Science and Technology (CST) in Phuentsholing has received 30 scholarships from the European Union partner universities after becoming a partner in the EU funded project eLINK.

445,200 euros has been allotted for Bhutan under the east-west link for innovation, networking and knowledge exchange project.

The scholarships have been divided into three categories: 12 slots for undergraduate studies for 10 months, 10 slots for Master’s programme for 20 months and eight slots for short-term academic visits for faculty members.

Twelve final year undergraduate students, 11 electrical students and one civil engineering student, who have been selected based on merit and relevance would be sent for a 10-month attachment.

Six students would be sent to Staffordshire University, five to Bradford University, both in the UK, and one to Italy. According to Director of CST, Nidup Dorji, the students would be taking modules and embark on substantial projects during the attachment.

For the 20 months Master’s degree programme, CST would send six students to Strafford University. Two students have already enrolled in the university. Four slots have been given to students of Gedu College of Business Studies, Jigme Namgyal Polytechnic and Sherubtse College.

Though all the students were supposed to leave by January, Nidup Dorji said they would be late because of the procedures in acquiring visas. The college has asked for a date extension.

There are eight slots for two-month long academic visits. Two faculty members have been sent to France, two will be sent to Hungary, two to Italy, one to Bradford and another to Stafford University.

Nidup Dorji said the project would mainly focus on mobility of students, researchers and academics between participating institutes for education, research and knowledge transfer.

“This will help the faculty observe some of the best practices and in collaborating for research and learning new ideas,” he said. He said that, though the scholarship programme is a one-time project, the college is proposing for extension of the project. The scholarship programme was awarded after CST joined the consortium and bid for the programme in 2008. The project consists of 11 members, five European and six Asian universities.
