The Bangladeshi community in Bhutan gathered at the chancery building of embassy of Bangladesh in Thimphu to celebrate its Bijôe Dibôsh (victory day) on Wednesday.

On December 16, 1971, Bangladesh under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, also known as father of nation, won a victory over Pakistani occupation forces with a vision of establishing a democratic and secular country.
Bangladesh achieved its independence as well as a name, Bangladesh, as a sovereign nation after nine-month-long liberation war where three million people sacrificed their lives and over 200,000 women lost their chastity.
Bangladesh ambassador to Bhutan, Mr Majibur Rahman Bhuiyan, said Bhutan was one of the first countries to recognise Bangladesh as a nation state. He said celebrating the day in Bhutan has always been special as Bhutan’s recognition boosted the morals of Bangladeshi citizens.
He also said the state visit of Bangladeshi Prime Minister to Bhutan would further boost and strengthen the already existing close friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
Ambassador said the prime objective of the liberation war was to build a happy and prosperous nation state where the common masses would lead a comfortable life. The present government is working towards fulfilling the aspirations of the father of nation, he said.
