High hope for new driving centre
4 November 2009
Scores of people are enrolling themselves in the second driving centre in the country, Gangjung driving centre of excellence, in Thimphu, which started on October 8.
The centre takes in 72 students in a month and all seats are booked till January, 2010.
There are three sessions in a day – morning, afternoon and evening sessions – between 6 am to 8 am, 9 am to 11.30 am, 12.30 pm to 3 pm, and 4.20 pm to 6.20 pm.
For morning and evening classes, trainees are charged Nu 2,500 and for day classes they are charged Nu 3,000. While the day classes are for new learners, the morning and evening classes are for people who lack confidence in driving and do not have a driving licence.
The centre has five male instructors and four vehicles – three Maruti cars and one Maruti van. When two more Maruti cars are bought, the centre plans to increase its slots from 72 to 130 in a month.
Rinchen Dorji, 29, one of the first batch students, who got himself registered after he saw the advertisement on BBS TV, said students who could not continue their studies after classes X and XII could train themselves at the centre to gain employment.
The proprietor, Ugyen Tenzin, said the centre provides a three-month course after which the students apply for a driving licence from Road Safety and Transport Authority.
“If they do not get a licence, we make sure that they get it by providing more training free of cost,” the owner said. If the students are unable workto attend their classes for three days in a row but inform the centre, they can attend the following month’s session.
But if they fail to inform the centre, their registration is forfeited.
Ugyen said it would take another two years to recover his investment.
Meanwhile, he has put up a proposal to set up driving centres in Lobesa, Wangdue and Bumthang.
The centre is planning to recruit about 10 to12 drivers for his centre from the first and second batch students. Ugyen said he will personally help the students of the rest of batches to find jobs.
