Family flees violent father
7 November 2009
When Dechen Wangmo, 38, first met her husband Samdrup Norbu, she had never thought that one day she would have to run from him for life. Dechen is yet another victim of domestic violence.
On the night of November 3, Dechen’s husband came home drunk and declared that he would either kill her or himself. In fear, she fled her home in Haa with her two young children to register for Renew’s help in Thimphu. According to Dechen, she has lived in fear for most part of the 17 years that she has been married to Samdrup. “It started a few years after the marriage. He has always threatened to kill me and my eldest daughter, who is his stepdaughter,” she said. “He has always mistreated her.”
Dechen said her eldest daughter, Norbu Yangzom, 18, is also a victim of her stepfather’s ill-treatment. She had been out of school and babysitting for a relative in Thimphu for three years. This year, she went back to a school in Haa. Norbu came to Thimphu yesterday after her stepfather came looking for her threatening to kill her. “My exams are just around the corner so I would like to appeal to the higher authorities to let me appear for my exams in Thimphu,” she said. “I cannot go back.”
However, according to Samdrup Norbu, he has never beat his wife or daughter. “Like any other married couple, we have had arguments but I never beat her,” he said. “I hope to get back with her.”
According to Renew, the case will need assessment. “Meanwhile, she will be provided protection as she is a victim and has asked for our help,” said Kezang D Choden, a counsellor at Renew.
