Each day, six road accidents

26 June 2009

On average, there are six serious vehicle accidents in Thimphu every day. Last week, there were two deaths caused by vehicle accidents.

According to the traffic division of the police, a minimum of 30 people are caught every day violating traffic rules.

Major Passang Dorji, the Superintendent Police of traffic division, said accidents could be avoided if motorists followed the traffic rules and regulations.

“The accidents are mainly caused by drink-driving, over speeding, carelessness and negligence,” he said.

The other reasons for accidents are unlicensed driving and parking space crunch. The police are taking some interim measures to address space crunch. However, there have been cases where unlicensed defaulters commit the same crime repeatedly, escaping with a mere fine.

Major Passang Dorji said the hide-and-seek will continue until the law is framed comprehensively and stringently.

Recently, the traffic police have been doing extensive road surveillance. Last week, the police used alcohol test kit. This week, they will be at various locations with speed guns to keep a tab on the speed of the vehicles.

Major Passang Dorji said that there was an urgent need to educate and create awareness among drivers.
