Beer runs dry in Trashigang

28 November 2009

Trashigang is seeing an increasing demand for beer as it has become the preferred drink both in the town and villages. This has lately led to its shortage. Villages in the dzongkhag, including that of Merak and Sakteng, have seen the increase in demand. In Merak and Sakteng, a bottle of cheaper brand of beer costs Nu 55, yet people prefer beer to hard drinks, according to a civil servant.
Four shops in Sakteng do a good beer business with each selling around 20 cartons (240 bottles) of beer every day. Altogether, Sakteng Gewog alone consumes 960 bottles of beer every day.
Mani Phuntsho, a bar owner in Radi, said he sold at least 4,000 cartons of beer annually. Trashigang Dzongkhag is estimated to consume around 10.92 million cartons of beer worth around Nu 5.76 million.
According to Gembo Tenzin of K C Stores, a Trashigang beer agent, his shop sold at least six to 10 trucks of beer every month. His minimum sale amounts to Nu 2.88 million annually.
In Trashigang town, every bar sells around three cartons of beer in a day. At the approach of Trashigang Tshechu on November 26, the supply has already outstripped the demand.
There is only one agent left to supply beer to 14 gewogs. Many bar owners go back empty-handed. Gembo Tenzin said the supply was usual, which showed that the demand had indeed increased.
Duba from Phongmey came to Trashigang town to buy 80 cartons of beer. But he had to go back with none. “It’s been a month since we did not get enough supply,” he said.
