Farming training in Khaling
24 July 2009
Farmers of Bjeri and Leza villages of Khaling Gewog in Trashigang received training on improved production of vegetables, paddy and orchard from the dzongkhag to encourage large-scale production.
According to the dzongkhag, the villagers have not been able to cultivate crops like paddy, vegetables and mandarin despite favourable conditions. Only few farmers from the villages market their produce due to lack of transportation facilities.
The farmers were trained on production technology to advance their interest in vegetable
cultivation. Dzongkhag Agriculture Officer (DAO) Dhendup Dukpa said the training would boost the farmers’ ability to plan and develop orchards.
In Lami and Tshamzor, the training emphasized on both theoretical and practical work in the field covering almost all the farming aspects like sowing time for vegetables and treatment of seeds.
The dzongkhag officials said the use of chemical fertilizers without studying the nutritional value of the soil was not recommended.
However, the farmers were trained on the use of fertilizers, including chemical fertilizers like urea, in rain to curb the loss of nitrogen.
Besides, the farmers were briefed on pest control and use of pesticides.
Before attending the training, Ngawang Tenzin, a farmer, did not know that the use of pesticides could kill other insects that were useful to farm.
Apart from vegetable cultivation, the farmers were also trained on orchard development which was a new concept in the villages.
