Tsangpo on mystery fire
3 January 2009
Several mysterious fires have ravaged a house in Tsangpo village in Trashigang. The first fire broke out from Norbu Wangdi’s kitchen last year.
Norbu Wangdi thought that the fire was caused by carelessness or electric short circuit. “But I was wrong,” he said. 34 days after the first fire, another fire gutted the ceiling of his house.
Norbu Wangdi built a small hut on his maternal uncle’s land, some 50 yards from his house. He got himself blessed by a lama. But his house was on fire for the third time. Even after the third fire, its cause remained a mystery for Norbu Wangdi as well as his fellow villagers, who helped him douse the fire.
Two weeks after the third fire outbreak in his house, Norbu Wangdi built another small hut on his paternal uncle’s land only to be engulfed by another mysterious fire. According to Norbu Wangchuk, there was not a trace of fire in that hut.
Norbu Wangchuk built a new house on the same spot where his old house stood. Three months later, though, his kitchen was up in flames. “The people from the gewog and dungkhag never believed me,” Norbu Wangchuk said. Kangpar Mangmi Kinga Dorji, who saw the fire, could not understand how the fire started. “There is not a trace of fire in the hearth and I wonder what caused the fire.” said the mangmi.
Meanwhile, another mysterious fire broke out in his uncle’s house. The mysterious fire has stopped after villagers performed some religious rituals.
