Singing show controversy

22 December 2009

druk star singing competitionDruk Star, the organizer of a similar show, Bhutan Star, which started a year earlier, says it is not fair that someone starts the same programme without informing him.

Nguldrub Dorjiks, the organiser of Bhutan Star, said that when he first brought in the concept of the show, he had a lot of hindrances but someone conducting the same show had been given the licence easily.

“It is the exact copy of my show but I was not informed,” he said. He added that he had registered his show with the Intellectual Property Division (IPD), but he did not get the right yet.

Nguldrub said he tried settling the case internally but the organisers of Druk Star refused to stop their show.

The Director of IPD, Subarna Lama, said the whole idea was not protected because it had to be expressed in a concrete form.

He said that copyright was not necessary. The fact that Nguldrub Dorjiks started the show earlier was prove enough. Yeshey Tshering, one of the organisers of Druk Star, said it was a business and that they got permission from Bhutan InfoCom and Media Authority to go ahead.

A ccording to the show director of DrukStar, Tshering Dorji, although the programme format of competition was similar (zhungdra, boedra and rigsar), the style of presentation would be different.

Nguldrub Dorjiks said that, if the authorities concerned did not stop the show, the last option was to drag the organisers to court.

Meanwhile, Nguldrub Dorjiks plans to begin the audition of Bhutan Star from the end of January. He said that, unlike last year, the three finalists will each win a car.

I don’t think Nguldrup needs to drag Druk Stars’ Organizer to Court. This is real a nuisance to people all around, rather than letting people to come up as a competitor.

We do understand that, to bring and implant a new idea and making it go well on floor needs much more effort, we appreciate Nguldrup. And moreover such show is not at all new to people all around the world. To say, this idea of yours might be originated from Indian Idol too. Who knows.

If Druk Star and Bhutan Star land up in such controversy, I think Bhutan Star Organiser and Indian Idol Organisers too need to come up with such contro. That didn’t happen. The only thing we appreciate is Bhutanese didn’t get the opportunity to disclose their talents like indians long before. We appreciate once more Nguldrups for his talents too.

And people all around cheers. Let us wish there comes lots and lots of Competitor other than DS and BS.

i really appreciated Nguldrup’s work but in modern world, we need so many competitors as to bring more help to the markets. that’s way i feel there shouldn’t be controversy amongst two. so, i suggest both can work together to make wonderful rather then taking or going to court.

It is the egoist way of challenging the other competitor. I also welcome both. We should not be looking one sided approach. If more competitors come, lot of opportunities will be granted to your talented youth. Druk Star should think of competing Bhutan Star. All the Best!

Oh wat the hell is going on there. Frankly, i didn’t all but the heading gave chill to my spine. This is another fucking brawl, wat is there if some one starts the same business, one has to stand by the quality and expectation. That’s all matter to the consumers who spend their hard-earned cash. After all, one has to know how to survive.

This is supplementary to my earlier comment (Raju). The registered names are different, so wat if so one starts 5 star can’t others start the same? If some one slleps with his/her girl/boy friend, can’t you sleep with yours? It just pisses me off. To me this is just another PP/KG class fight. So i won’t comment any more. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2010 to ALL.

From where did Nguldrup Dorjikss brought the concept? It is from Indian Idol and the Indian Idol is the Indian version of American Idol. I read that the Sony Television has paid the UK Company Fremantle Media for bringing the concept to India. Whether American Idol or Indian Idol, the concept is same – To discover the best singer in the country through a series of nation-wide auditions, and subsequent viewer voting by sms or phone. So what different concept did Nguldrup Dorjikss bring in with his Bhutan Star. He should be actually paying millions to the creator company for bringing the concept into Bhutan. Does this companies know that their concept has been hijacked in a country called Bhutan by some lazy entrepreneurs. It would be better for him to keep quiet before he is dragged by another international company to court.

It is my opinion, in one way Dorjikss is right, Bhutan Star and Druk Star is same. Bhutan and Druk is one thing. It would have been fair that other counterpart would have come up with different name. For instance in India, they have Saregamapa, indian idol, voice of india. Shows are similar but name given are different. At first I thought Bhutan Star and Druk Star was same, therefore, there every possibility that people will view it as same. Taking concept idea doesn’t matter, but the name of show indeed matters in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). For instance, Indian Idol is co-produced with FremantleMedia (the makers of Americal Idol), which is owned by the German media corporation bertelsmann and hence Indian Idol organizer did not have right to use expression “Idol”. Controversy between Indian Idol and Bhutan Star did not arise because name used was not Bhutan Idol. It is therefore, my opinion that it would be wiser to have different name but not Druk Star which is substantially the same name as of Bhutan Star. Person has right to engage in same business, but they don’t have right to give similar name which would confuse the general public.

well i would say Nidup dorji is right in a way there are many such shows in india but if you carefully follow each show the formats are different. and also the names. we already have a show so the new once could have changed the format a bit and conducted a competition for children below 18 and given the little once a chance

well we need more players on the scene for talents to showcase. no one can claim monopoly over such a show. Nguldrup will always remain a pioneer but should be gracious enough for other players to step in. this will help in producing the best talents. no more fighting gentlemen.

  11. rixin on January 5th, 2010 7:32 pm

well, the organiser of the Druk Star should have atleast different name for a show. what is the difference between Druk & Bhutan? Dorjikss has right to drag the imitator to the court for the same name and even the content.
