Quake relief works affect work plans

Earthquakes and aftershocks have affected this year’s work plan in the eastern dzongkhags.

Mongar Dzongda Sherab Tenzin said the dzongkhag was behind the planned work schedule by almost two months. This he said was because they had to engage themselves in relief operations and damage assessment after repeated earthquakes.

However, he said development activities in the dzongkhag would not be affected as it still had a few months to complete the planned works. “As per our work plan, we should have handed over 11 community forests to the people by now, but we have been able to handover only eight,” said Dhendup Tshering, Trashigang Dzongkhag Forestry Officer (DFO).

Drupchuwoong community forest in Yangnyer Gewog was supposed to have been handed over in October but the officials could not because the gewog was affected by the earthquake. Dhendup Tshering said, the dzongkhag could not handover the community forest because many people were affected by the earthquake and the officials concerned were occupied in damage assessment.

Another dzongkhag official in Trashigang said an executive plan that required immediate implementation had been affected. “Even monitoring works, initiation activities and project proposals are now pending,” said the official. However, he said he and his colleagues had been trying to attend to their work plan whenever they had time.

“The implementation would not be affected if the developmental and service sectors were not involved in the quake assessment,” said the official.

A dzongkhag official from Trashiyangtse said that the work plan of the dzongkhag too has been affected because most of the officials were engaged in relief operations and compiling damage reports in the dzongkhag.

The earthquake has also affected the work plan in the gewogs. According to Yangnyer Gup Duptho, earthquake relief works has left him little time for his office work. But he said he did office works whenever he found time.
