Man falls from electric tower to death

19 December 2009

A 25-year-old man working in Bhutan Power Corporation died on December 15 on the way to Pemagatshel hospital after falling from an electric tower. Dorji, an electrician, was working on a newly constructed electric tower in Dengtzirawa, about five km from Pemagatshel proper. He was trying to secure transmission cables on the tower when the cables snapped sending him plunging from a height of about 30 metres.

“He was brought to the hospital dead,” said Rinchen Phuntsho, the Assistant Clinical Officer, at the hospital. He said that, although there were no external injuries, the deceased had suffered fatal head and internal injuries.

From Dagana, the deceased is survived by a minor son and his wife from Nganglam, where he had been posted. He was called in to help in realigning some transmission lines in Pemagatshel on temporary duty along with BPC staff from other substations.

Eye witnesses say that the deceased landed on stones below.

BPC should be charged for failure to implment the safety measures. The deceased should have been asked to put on the safety rope and necessary safety gadgets. It is sad the biggest corporation in the country takes the life for granted and there is not a minimum safe working standard. The labour authority should take stringent action against the defaulters and ensure necessary safety standard is practised by all employers.

Yes it was entirely the fault of BPC for not maintaining standard safety working procedures for the lines men who work with high risks.
