Druk Star audition begins

21 December 2009

Contestants of Druk Star at the audition in ThimphuThe first round of audition for Druk Star, a singing show, was held in Thimphu on December 15.

Thirty-three eager contestants, most of them students, turned up for the audition at Norbuling Drayang.

Thirty-year-old Nim Dorji, a traffic policeman, was the first to be auditioned. He was participating in a singing competition for the first time. He said singing had always interested him. “I don’t expect to win but I hope to reach the top 20,” he said.

Pema Choden, a 16-year-old student from Yangchenphu Higher Secondary School in Thimphu, stumbled upon the lyrics of her song during the audition. The judges gave her a second chance, but she failed again. However, she sang another song confidently.

“I can’t sing zhungdra well,” she admitted. The contestants had to sing the three popular genres of Bhutanese songs – zhungdra, boedra and rigsar. They were judged by a panel of three judges.

A fter the three-day audition in Thimphu, the judges will go to seven other dzongkhags for audition. A total of 45 contestants will be selected from the auditions.

However, only the top 20 contestants would be selected for the final round.

The top 20 contestant will perform live. They will be judged by three judges and voted by the audience. The elimination would be based on 30 percent jury marks and 70 percent audience votes.

The top five contestants will be judged entirely by the audience vote although the jury members will be there to comment on their performance.

The winner of Druk Star, who will drive home a car, will hold the title of the voice of the youth. The programme is organised by KK Production and Wisdom Pictures in collaboration with Bhutan Broadcasting Service Corporation (BBS).

“We started this proDruk Star audition beginsgramme to promote our culture and tradition and to hunt for talents. This will also be providing job opportunities,” said Yeshey Tshering from Wisdom Pictures. The auditions will be aired on BBS television.

The show director and producer, Tshering Dorji from BBS, said there were eight zones, and there would be eight programmes of 30 minutes each which would be recorded and aired starting from the launch.

E ach contestant paid a registration fee of Nu 500 each.

The programme will last for around four months. The finals will be held on April 3 next year. D ruk Star was launched on December 13.

I hope this time a person with a golden voice wins the competition. Last year’s show was a disappointment in the end.

laygman same like you. i hope this time it wont be that of last year. It was opposite last year when the good voice was in second place , the best was given to lady without having any good qualities of voice. She got a vote from a man who is her sponsor day and nite. Shamelesss that lady, if i am i cant show myself in the society. She might be feeling proud of herself. opps….

The healthy competition should be welcomed. Although the program is the replica of many of such programs in India where too came from the western world, putting it in our own way will promote our culture. Further more organizers mean more of our young friends will get an opportunity to prove their marketable talent and skills which otherwise could have gone unnoticed for ever. I congratulate the organizers.

Nguldrup Dorjiks seems to claim the ownership of the concept of the program. Replicating similar although may not be a problem, claiming the right of the ownership of the concept which does not belong to one will be a serious issue if original organizer pursue. Every body knows the idea does not belong to Nguldrup Dorjiks, so it should not be a problem to Druk star but Nguldrup should watch out for claiming the ownership of the concept.

please from the begining itself I want to request one thing for Druk star coordinator that dont pont thoes contestants who are in danger zone before closing the time for vote, because it makes difference la……..that means thoes who had large relatives will naturaly win from that we will not get the druk star, it will go before last years type.
so therefore to make a capable person as drukstar was only that solution sir……..

i wonder when music tandin dorji keep as a judge
how comes he is not singer nor actor……….i think he wont be there la……..
its not fair……….u better keep someone in his place…….
why u cant keep Madam Dechen Pem , nidup Dorji………………etc…………

  14. Peace on March 16th, 2010 1:02 pm

    Hello Tshoki,

Well i am not here to argue with you but then just to make it little clear to your above Question- you wonder why tandin dorji is a judge- as far as kencho and tandin dorji himself mention thats being a part of the music world.. where he tend to deal with all songs- he makes it clear for all of us about the beat- the lyric ( as he proudly says- it’s the scale) so rigsal- it mainly deal with the tune- the lyric- the scale – how it carry on so in this – a music director would be a better judge if i am not wrong- just a view though- anyways hope it ends well- and my best wishes goes to jangchug- ( i love when she sings rigsal) no doubt- jampel- gr8 voice- and welcome bck the cheychey ( gyem dorji )of the drukstar. we want you to be in top 6 atlst- keepin my finger crossed-
