Sewing a living
17 November 2009
More than 60 people in Lingmithang, Mongar, know how to use a sewing machine, and almost every household owns a sewing machine. That could be the reason why the two tailoring shops there do not run well. All thanks to Lopoen Phuntsho who is a tailoring master.
Three years ago, Lopoen Phuntsho, 55, started tailoring classes for the non-formal education (NFE) learners in Lingmithang under the government initiative. His classes were popular among both the NFE learners and others. NFE learners were given the preference, though.
Lopoen Phuntsho has 30 years of experience in tailoring and his classes include basic tailoring and designing courses. The students are given a handbook each, which has the basics of how to operate a sewing machine. Although the course is for 90 days, Lopoen Phuntsho says he teaches the students an extra month because some are slow learners. Except on the weekend, the tailoring classes are between 5 pm and 8 pm.
Presently, Lopoen Phuntsho is giving tailoring lessons to a class of NFE learners from Gyelpoizhing comprising eight women and a man.
