Farm road construction begins

24 November 2009

The construction of 10.1-km farm road from Khinadang under Zobel Gewog to Yelchen in Pemagatshel began from November 14.
Funded by the government, the Nu 28 million farm road is expected to enhance living standard of the people by enabling them to market their farm produce without having to carry on their back for hours. The road will also benefit the people in availing themselves of essential services like medical and other help.
Talking to over a hundred people, who attended the ground breaking ceremony, Dzongda Goling Tshering reminded the people that, having roads connected to their villages alone was not going to change their lives for better if they could not make the best use of it.
He told the people that, while the road in the present phase was up to the gewog centre at Yelchen, studies were done to connect other villages.
The Dzongkhag Agriculture Officer, Kiran Subedi, said the new farm road would serve as a takeoff point for other farm roads within the gewog. “We will be conducting a geotechnical study on Tshatsi and Dagore road next,” he said.
Nanong Gup Putur said the new farm road would benefit the four villages of Pangthang, Kulung, Zhingrey and Yelchen with more than a hundred households. A few villages from Lumang Gewog under Wamrong Dungkhag will also find the road handy.
Once completed, the road is expected to boost cash crop production. Nanong Gewog has suitable soil and weather condition for almost all types of crops. Together with Dagore village under Shumar Gewog, the entire region is famous for molasses cones (locally called Khomin Buram) extracted from sugarcane.
Other important crops in the area are groundnut and citrus. “A pon (80 pieces) of mandarin costs a minimum of Nu 20 as carrying charges to reach to the nearest road head at present.
This will come down drastically once the road is completed,” said Gup Putur.
The proprietor of Norgay Constructions, which won the bid, said they would try to complete the project before the deadline of 20 months. This will be the second farm road under Nanong Gewog. The 10.4-km Ngangshing-Woongchilo farm road, which was completed earlier this year, is the other farm road in the gewog.
