Bangladeshi PM in Bhutan

The Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, will arrive in the kingdom today on a three-day state visit. She will be received by Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y Thinley at the Paro airport.
Tomorrow, she will receive an audience with His Majesty the King. His Majesty will host a lunch for the Prime Minister and her delegation at the Dechenchholing Palace.
The Bhutanese Economic Affairs Minister and Bangladeshi Commerce Minister in the presence of the two prime ministers will sign a trade agreement at the Gyalyong Tshokhang on November 7. Bangladesh will present its earthquake relief assistance to Bhutan.
The chambers of commerce of the two countries will sign a memorandum of understanding in the presence of the prime ministers in Thimphu. Trade between Bangladesh and Bhutan saw a substantial increase in the last 19 years. In 2008, the value of trade between the two countries recorded at Nu 755.96 million, which is highest till date.
Export and import saw an increasing trend, according to a press release from the foreign ministry. “Bangladesh garments, which are affordable and are of good quality, have found ways into every part of the country, keeping the people warm, especially in winter while apples and oranges from Bhutan keep the Bangladeshis healthy,” the press release said.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1973 and resident missions were set up in 1980.

Meanwhile, the new Ambassador of Bangladesh to Bhutan, A K M Majibur Rahman Bhuiyan, presented his credentials to His Majesty the King at the Tashichhodzong on November 3.

Ambassador A K M Majibur was serving as minister in the Bangladeshi Embassy in Tokyo, Japan, before he was appointed as Bangladesh’s new Ambassador to Bhutan.

    Hope this visit will establish a strong relationship. I like the Bhutanese, they are simple and honest.

    Bhutan was the first country to recognize Bangladesh. And thus our country is deeply grateful to Bhutan. Hopefully, this visit will underscore the historic relationship between the two countries and also lay some of the foundations for sub-regional economic integration in eastern South Asia.

    Bhutan is considered as a historic friend in Bangladesh. This visit will certainly expand our relationship as Bangladesh is looking keenly at Bhutan’s hydro power potential to meet our soaring demand.

    Bhutan is our best friend country. We are really grateful to Bhutanese people and government that Bhutan was among the first countries to recognize independent Bangladesh. During the visit of our PM we are hopeful business and culture will be develop day by day between two countries.
