Aftershock fear stalls reconstruction

People in the eastern dzongkhags, including Trashigang and Mongar, are skeptical about starting the reconstruction works in fear of aftershocks.
Trashigang Dzongkhag disbursed the insurance claims last week. But some people from Durung said possible aftershocks might not allow them to rebuild their homes. None of the affected households in Durung has started rebuilding work.
“We have to wait until the aftershocks stop,” said Ugyen Tshering from Durung. He said their rebuilding works could be severely disrupted if another aftershock hits the village. Therefore, villagers do not want to take any chances.
The villagers said they could not afford to lose their insurance claims to another earthquake. They wanted to be sure that reconstruction works were not hampered. “We cannot afford the money to rebuild our homes two times,” said Ugyen Tshering.
People from Narang Gewog in Mongar also said they did not want to start reconstruction amid sporadic aftershocks.
“It is hard to say if the September 21 earthquake has completely stopped,” said Dorji Wangchuk from Narang. Ugyen Wangchuk from the same village said he would prefer to wait for aftershocks to stop.
Meanwhile, Yangnyer Gup Duptho said the people of Yangnyer have already started rebuilding their homes. “There are a few people who started rebuilding their homes immediately after the earthquake struck,” said the gup.
He said the gewog had been supporting the villages in reconstruction of their homes in every way possible through the assistance from the army.
