Strengthening media for democracy

29 September 2009

To identify key characteristics of the media environment in which freedom of expression, independence, and pluralism of the media can flourish, a meeting was held between Ministry of Information and Communications (MoIC), Bhutanese media representatives and UNESCO experts at the MoIC hall last week.

The participants considered various means by which the media could bridge government- public link by disseminating information. Most participants were of the view that the media responsibility and coverage in a small society and its impacts required extensive study.

The deliberation also aimed at developing an assessment strategy and implementation plan for the media assessment in Bhutan, draw a memorandum of understanding between the Department of Information and Media (DoIM), UNESCO, UNDP and SEAPA, and report key achievements and concept for implementation.

“While we are in the process of developing our own media assessment guidelines, International Programme for Development of Communication (IPDC) could be referred as it reflects the expertise of international luminaries in the field of media and communications,” said MoIC Secretary Dasho Kinley Dorji.

IPDC has developed the UNESCO Media Development Indicators The General Conference Resolution of UNESCO encourages the free flow of information, at international as well as national levels, to promote the wider and better dissemination of information, without any obstacle to freedom of expression, and to strengthen communication capacities in the developing countries in order to increase their participation in the communication process.

Media is very essential in the country like young democracy ,BHUTAN. Democracy means for the people,to the people and by the people. In this sense , media and democracy is a two sides of the same coin. So, international organisations should mobilize and focuse the concerned authoriies to bring them into the right tracks for protecting peoples’ right and duties..

Having noted that media freedom the information should not be bias to that which creates tensions in family members of Bhutan though are of various races, races and religion…. On the other hand every family member has equal responsibility to hear or read, and decode the message giving good time and wise thought keeping in mind the vitality other member citizens rights as well. Let media be media without being bias in informing citizens!!!
