Shingkhar specialties in Thimphu

Food lovers in the capital have something to look forward to this Sunday. Shingkhar Village Food festival 2009 will be held at Rabten apartments. O rganized by Shingkhar Dechenling Phenday Tshogpa, the food festival will be held between 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm.

On the menu will be traditional food items from the village of Shingkhar in Bumthang including traditional drinks, soup, snacks, salad and dessert.

Food items such as puta, brangnya, tshog, khurwa, kebtang, krujuma, throen, mapin, and rotormai zama, among others, will be on display.

A bout 40 different organic and healthy items will be prepared by the people of Shingkar village with locally available products.

Contributions starting from Nu 700 will be accepted from participants coming for the food festival. S hingkhar Dechenling Phenday Tshogpa was established in 2006 by the people of Shingkhar living in Thimphu to look after the welfare of Shingkharpas in times of need.

It is also aimed at preserving local culture, improve and enhance community cooperation and to support mutual community development.

Shingkhar lies in the valley of Bumthang at an altitude of 3,400 metres above sea level. The people rear livestock and practise subsistence farming.

S hingkhar literally means the wooden house. The place was so named after Loncghen Rabjampa’s followers built a throne and a little wooden cabin for their master to teach.

The village has 35 households with about 300 people.
