New stadium for Phuentsholing

29 September 2009

Sports enthusiasts in Phuentsholing are awaiting a facelift of the Phuentsholing Sports Association (PSA) ground into a grand stadium. The stadium will benefit not only Phuentsholing but also the nearby southern dzongkhags.

The Phuentsholing City Corporation initiated the project with Nu 9.8 million assistance from the Asian Development Bank. According to Bikash Pradhan, the PSA Secretary General, the existing infrastructure will be renovated and properly fenced.

A three-sided public gallery to accommodate 5,000 spectators will be built and five floodlights worth Nu 60,000 each will be installed, said Bikash.

He added that after the completion of the stadium, it will help them generate funds through ticketing so as to organise more tournaments and encourage youth participation. The project that started in July is scheduled to be complete within 16 months.

Meanwhile, since the PSA ground is under renovation, some football enthusiasts have made contributions and started playing futsal in a volleyball court near Phuentsholing hospital.
