Festival sales
28 September 2009
Everyone in Thimphu is in festive mood these days. With Thimphu tshechu underway and dashain around the corner, tailors and garment shops in Thimphu had a busy week. Tailors worked till mid night to deliver orders on time.
Both tshechu and dashain are occasions when people wear best of their clothes. Many sew new clothes while other buys from a range of readymade items.
Many shops in Thimphu started festival sales from earlier this month. The sales are overflowing with intriguing garments from Bangladesh and Thailand. On sales are textiles, handicraft items, foot wares, bags, toys, electronics and many more.
Different shops have different schemes. Some are giving flat discount ranging from 10 to 40 percent while others follow buy-two-and-get-one-free scheme. Shopkeepers say festival sales offer them an opportunity to sell old stocks without much investment.
It is a time when a lot of people come to the town. Special schemes attract customers. Shopkeepers say they sell with a ceiling of at least 10 percent profit. The small profit margin is compensated by large turnover.
It is common sight to see shopkeepers display wares outside the shops with price tags on them. The sales continue till the end of the festival season.
