A model in the making
28 September 2009
Modelling was not her dream. Never did she think that she would walk the ramps and promoting some well-known brands. But she is living the dream she never dreamt. From a timid girl, Samphelmo Sherpa has become a promising model at the age of 24.
I t all started when she was a freshman at Garden City College in Bangalore, India. There was a national-level fashion show competition and her seniors forced her to participate in it. Her college won the show. After that, Samphelmo started participating in more college and inter-college fashion show competitions.
Her tryst with modelling received a boost when her picture appeared in the Times of India, one of India’s top dailies. That day, the college notice board was filled with her pictures. E ncouraged by her newfound popularity, she took part in L’oreal Colour Trophy 2005 and emerged the regional winner of the “Next Generation Outlook.”
A s the grand finalist, she went to represent Bangalore in Mumbai. There, she met Indian supermodel Malika Arora, and top designers, editors of prestigious magazines, famous makeup artists, hair stylists and other famous personalities of the fashion world.
“It has been an amazing experience and I am very lucky to have got the opportunity to meet people of that stature,” she said.
A fter that, Samphelmo did campaigns for PUMA, Cannon Camera, Country Club, Tanishq jewellery, Allukas jewellery, Gold Finch and a couple of ramp shows for the Maharaja of Mysore and different designers.
Recently, she has been shortlisted for a screen test for Levis and Pantene and is waiting for the results. S he also did a print advertisement for Smile magazine. She not only models, but also does professional makeup for aspiring models.
Born and brought up in Thimphu, Samphelmo left for Bangalore six years ago to pursue higher studies. She has a Bachelors degree in Business Management from Garden City and is presently doing her Masters in the Indian Institute of Planning and Management.
S he says modelling is exciting and full of opportunities. “We get to see many places, experience various cultures and meet different people but at the same time it is very competitive,” she said.
Weighing 50 kg, she claims to have been slim since childhood. To stay fit, she performs household chores like washing, cleaning, cooking and mopping floors. She does skipping and yoga 10 days before her assignments.
The five feet four inches tall model says she is happy modelling because it has groomed her and made her more confident and ambitious. “The whole thing has been a worthwhile experience,” she said.
S he says she was a shy girl during her school days and is thankful to her teachers at Nima Higher Secondary School who helped her build her confidence.
S he frequently misses a class because of modelling assignments but says she is serious about her studies too. She worked hard and topped some of the subjects.
S amphelmo says modelling is not the top priority for her. “It is a hobby and a part-time passion to earn pocket money,” she said. She uses the money she earns for shopping, entertainment and daily expenses.
I nitially, it was difficult for her to convince her parents, especially her father, to allow her to do modelling. “I had to literally cry over the phone for my first trip to Mumbai,” she said.
S he says she will return home after completing her masters. She has many future plans. “I will have to see which one materialises,” she said.
“Be modest and humble and carry the right attitude,” she says as a piece of advice for aspiring models.
