26 June 2009
Foreign Minister Ugyen Tshering is well known as an internet savvy and intellectual person. He is soft-spoken and humble. Many claim that he was the first Bhutanese to use a computer.
On Sunday, Lyonpo visited Semtokha Dzong in the morning with his son to attend a religious ceremony. Then he went on a short trek to Dodey Ney with his family and friends.
On Monday, he received the new UNDP resident representative to Bhutan, Ms Claire Van der Vaerer.
On Tuesday, Lyonpo Ugyen Tshering attended the routine Lhengye Zhungtshog meeting. In the meeting, he discussed his visit to the Non-aligned Movement (NAM) summit which will take place in Egypt, among others.
Wednesday saw the minister with several delegations coming to Bhutan. He attended meetings and talks.
On Thursday, he took care of his pending office work since he would be occupied by the National Assembly once the session started. He reviewed the preparations for the high level delegations that will be coming to Bhutan in the next few months as well as Bhutanese delegations going out of Bhutan. In the evening, he attended a reception by the speaker of the National Assembly.
Today, he will attend the opening of the third session of the National Assembly. “We have already had two interesting and important sessions. This should be as interesting or more, everyone is learning from the process,” he said.
Tomorrow, he will read reports and papers. He will also go for a trek with his family and friends and try to meet his colleagues.
He plans to stay home on Sunday and spend time with his wife, son and daughter as well as read and prepare for the National Assembly and NAM meeting.
He likes to spend his free time surfing the internet for news and general information. He reads his favourite magazine Popular Science. He tries to spend more time with his family, especially when his children are at home. He enjoys looking at architecture, equipment and machines.
He is keenly interested in IT and history and occasionally watches television for news.
His favourite Bhutanese food is suja and zau.
“I am interested in a lot of things and it’s been a very interesting life so far. And I hope it will only get more interesting. I have a family that has always been supportive to me,” Lyonpo said.
