Singing in the wind: Sonam Yangden can't help jumping with glee
This 19-year-old girl from Trashigang was planning further studies when Jigdrel Trophel kicked off Druki Sungki Dendur. Sonam Yangden thought she could study after the initial selection so she gave it a try. Little did she suspect that she would be declared the first Bhutanese Star on new year’s eve. Dressed to impress in grand attire, the top five contestants looked primed for the showdown.
Before the finals, Sonam Yangden had rated her chances of winning at 90 percent. Even after the results were declared, she said she continued to feel nervous.
“Winning is not the ultimate goal but I am proud I won, being a woman,” she said, with unhidden excitement. “I did not have the full confidence that I could win.” Sonam Yangden is staying with cousins in Thimphu while her single mother stays in Trashigang and her siblings in Phuentsholing.
“I want to be a playback singer,” she said. “I will train to work behind the scenes.” She won 44,108 votes. She said that it was because of people’s support for her that she won. “I did try my best too but the votes also made a difference. I want to thank all my voters.” As the Bhutan Star winner, she took away a Maruti Swift car sponsored by Ugen Tshechup of Zimdra Automobiles. She will also sign a music contract worth Nu 100,000 with Jigdrel Trophel.
Karma Phuntsho, another 19-year-old from Trashigang, also dropped schooling to be a part of the Druki Sungki Dendur. With 28,420 votes, he was declared the first runner- up and given a cash prize of Nu 150,000.
Tshering Namgay, a 20-year-old farmer from Wangdue, was the second runner-up with 23,555 votes. He got a cash prize of Nu 50,000.
Tshering Dorji, a 24-year-old from Haa working in Bhutan Power Corporation, was declared the third runner-up having won 22,923 votes. He also took a cash prize of Nu 50,000. Rinzin Wangchuk, 24, from Samtse, was declared the fourth runner-up with 6,223 votes. He received a cash prize of Nu 50,000 as well. “The five of them will soon be going around the country conducting live shows. In a way, it is to thank the voters,” said organiser Nguldrub Dorjiks.
An album will also be released featuring the five of them.
Meanwhile, Nguldrub Dorjiks said that he was preparing for the 2009 sequel.

sonam was not that great comparing to the other contestents…i think there is corruption involved in this show too….may be what people say about sonam yangdon is correct…they say that her boyfriend is a rich contractor who bought votes for her.. if such incidents happen, it will be de motivating for other talented singers…sonam;s position rightly belongs to 5th
she dont deserve the title. she was not good. other singers were far better than her.

As most of the people says, Sonam Yangden is not at all good in singing, it is right that she is only a makeup profermer and not in singing. Actually she has to be in 5th position among the five constents, but the result was unfair and she was decleared as a first bhutanese star. it was not a bhutanese star competation(Dendur) but money competation ( Dendur).
I fully frusted with the winner of Bhutan Star 2008, coz the 3rd should be the first,he desreved it but somebody says she have got one contracter boyfreind, its the true yaaaaaaaa. i think she should be the 5th one where her voice is like a dog barking . ples go throug this sonam yangden. you r the worst singer n i never ever purchasing ur album.
Her behaviour in the public should have to be improved. its not the behave that she done coz what other four frens think off when she jumped up & down for several times when she received the price?
Most of the people says, sonam Yangdon is not atall good in singing.yes I say, because she is only a makeup performer and not in singing. Actually she is suppost to be 5th position among four contestants, but she was supported by other high cast thakurs and had got the title. the result was unfair and she was decleared as a winner, the first bhutanese star 08. I deserved Tshering Namgay to be the winner bez he is good in singing and people of twenty dzongkhags could have happy if he or Karma Phuntsho is the winner. But peoples aspection were all in vain.

Sonam was great and public vote for her. If your candidate was not selected, it is your fault, you should have vote for him/her. All finalists were superb, they did great job. Sonam, don’t worry you deserve ur title and you got it. If someone is not happy, it is his or her fault, coz… they should have vote for thier candidates.

wow, talented people like Nidup Dorji has share his talent and let other people to show their talent, so he has made a country very talented, doing this kind of work its really wonderful, it also benift people, counrty, himslef, we never thought we will able to see this kind of show, so NIDUP DORJI thank for your great idea, we the bhutaness people are proude of you and rest of the member.

she does not deserve be the first bhutanese star, i was sure that karma phuntsho will be first and tshering namgay will be second . i did not hear any gud voice from sonam , she was not singing gud at all, i dont know how she got first bhutanse star.
if money talks every where? all the bhutanese peoples can effort to join bhutan star and become bhutan star easily. if first bhutan idol is a wrong person ..what will be the condition of next/future bhutanese idol…..sonam yangdon is not fit for first bhutan star as she dont hve singing quality like wht others constents have…so the committee of Bhutan stars should realy have to look on this better for next bhutan star…..

Actually sonam yangden should have concluded her post since she was declare as the fifth contestent from the last result.. that time her vote was lowest amongst the five of the them…we wonder why there was not top 4,3,2,1… if that was there her turn was finish from last time only…so in this regard the committe of bhutan idol should look into the matter next time.choosing of wrong person is wastage of everything such as public money,time and so on….
as always bhutanese people complaining…first they do not participate and when the result is decleared they complain….same happened with the government….people did not vote but when the result were decleared they regreated….what ever the result of the bhutanese star may be it was fair enough….if she had a rich boyfriend it was her luck….I am sure the others also had loved and they voted a lot for them….but why acuse her now….

the victory of sonam yangden is purely a nonsense. her soul is far behind than other contestant. its not that people didnt vote other contestant. we did but it is 101% sure, sonam yangden got sponsore from so many big business man. we are shocked after hearing that and we dont know what magic she have done to them???????????????????????????????????????? now she is planning to go for further studies, and we know now she can manage to go further as she must be having lots of sponsore, so in conclusion i would like to say, dukgi sungker dangdur is purely a wastage and we dont want such reality shows in future if the same thing happens. honestly speaking some have left their school and some left their precious time hoping to become a star. also they deserve to be an idol as compared to sonam yangden. so its also a misuse of public funds as jigdrel trophel has taken sponsores from so many companies, ngos and so on. so stop such shows in future.
