Land of ours

13 November 2009

land of oursWai! This land of ours, this jewel set in the Himalayas, is increasingly reeling from some of our much vaunted development.

Even as rural schools are going through an agonizing time with teacher shortage, the capital city is blissfully enjoying the excess mania.

Even as cattle farming is declining in rural areas, an increasing number of cattle are seen in the towns, wandering or scavenging.

Even as businesses the world over are devastated by the global economic recession, Bhutan’s vehicle licence business remains mysteriously unscathed.

Even as the politicians milk their new-found entitlements, their parties are running out of money and members.

Even as the biggest Buddha statue in the world is taking shape atop a Thimphu hill, hundreds of chortens around the country are being hollowed out.

Even as the CDG is being debated, the MPs are already implementing their CDG-funded development plans.

Even as the civil service adopts the zero growth policy, government offices are finding an increasing need for more people.

Even as balanced and equitable development remains a pillar of GNH, poverty remains a largely rural phenomenon.

Even as the country’s per capita income rises, some people find themselves out on the street, begging.

Even as brilliant sparks light us on, stealthy shadows creep along.
