Ap Tsara speaks…
25 April 2009
Wai! A famous humorist once said, “There are three things most essential for a successful life. Good education, good heart and good humour.”
Our elected ministers certainly have had impeccable education. The goodness of their heart will unravel within their term in power. Today, let us gauge their sense of humour.
In serious humour, for a poor kingdom like us where housing and land issues remain a bane for the common people, which joker dreamed up such an elaborate and expensive minister’s enclave?
A precious inspiration resides in a simple log cabin in the heart of a spacious valley. While in the heart of a congested capital, we have erected a garishly posh enclave. Adorned with imported doors, windows and chandeliers, I hope inspiration is as impressed as integrity for superficiality.
I thought our politicians were chosen for their empathy to the common people’s woes like affordable housing. Is the showbiz and pomp of power the glory of democracy?
The necessity of housing is today a rare luxury. The common people cannot afford the affordable housing in the capital. The supply is just too limited. The lucky few live in rented apartments. Most others are rented into joint family situations.
Wait a minute, there is news of a housing vacancy. Some cabinet ministers cum landlords are not moving into the posh bungalows. But there is a familiar catch. The bungalows are affordable only for the powerful.
As for landlords, any talk about affordable housing is just an exaggerated tale. After all, they own several of them.
The majority of our urban people do not own homes. If democracy is power to the people, this simple fact is ample food for thought.
