Run against corruption tomorrow
8 December 2008
Tomorrow, more than 1000 people geared up in running shoes will be running against corruption in Thimphu.
Organized by the Citizen’s Initiative for Centenary and Coronation Celebrations (CICCC), the centenary marathon themed Run Against Corruption will be flagged off at nine in the morning from three different places. The marathon is divided into three categories. The open category is open to both men and women of all ages.
They will have to run 10 kms, starting at the CICCC ground. The women category, which is open to women of all ages, is a seven-km race that starts from Lanjophakha. The veteran category is for both men and women above the age of 50. They will have to run five kms, starting at the Indian embassy.
The open category winner will get a cash prize of Nu 50,000 and the runners up will get Nu 20,000. The second runner up will get Nu 10,000. Five consolation prizes of Nu 3,000 will be given.
The women category winner will get Nu 30,000, the first runner-up will get Nu 10,000 and the second runner-up will get Nu 7000. There will be three consolation prizes of Nu 2,000 each. The veteran category features prizes of Nu 20,000, Nu 7,000 and Nu 5,000 for the podium place winners, and three consolation prizes of Nu 2,000 each.
More than 700 people have registered to run against corruption presently but organizers are expecting more than 1,000 on the actual day.
From the registered participants running on December 9, which is also celebrated as International Anti-Corruption Day, the youngest is a sevenyear- old girl while the oldest is a 54-year-old man.
Pemba Wangchuk, the coordinator of the centenary marathon, said that this race was organized in order to contribute to the historic centenary and coronation celebration and to sensitize the public about corruption.
Even as the racers run, a street theatre company will perform along Norzin Lam to “entertain the participants and the public as well as breed fear of what corruption could do,” said Pemba. T-shirts will be distributed freely and refreshments will be given to the participants.
The marathon is sponsored by the Anti Corruption Commission of Bhutan. More than 30 of their staff will also be participating.
