The Coronation and Centenary basket ball tournament, held in the Youth Development complex, is battling it out with 24 teams.

The tournament, which runs from December 6-17, is organized by LD Technology in collaboration with the Youth Development Fund and it is sponsored by Bhutan National Bank Limited, Bhutan Post and Tashi Cell.

Tsherap, the organizer said that the tournament is for the commemoration of coronation and centenary celebration, “since the YDF hall is new and so we thought of celebrating the special occasion in Basketball court of YDF”.

He said that they will be giving attractive prizes for the winning teams and the best players. “Right now we are in the verge of deciding the prizes for the winners”. He said that they will also give the certificates to the players when it ends on December 17 to coincide with the national day celebrations.

“I am excited that I got the opportunity to take part in the coronation and centenary celebration of our kingdom,” said Pema Khenrab, BNBL employee, who is the Manager of Kathraps team.

He said that this tournament is not ordinary but a historic occasion, to be cherished throughout his life. Sonam Jamtsho, a BDFCL employee, said that he was not after the prizes. “I am participating for the celebration and it doesn’t matter whether we win or lose it is just the matter of participation on this special occasion of our kingdom.”

He added that this time there are fewer teams compared to last time. “Last tournament there was 34 teams and I think most of the players were students and this time they are in school appearing exams and that might be the reasons for less turn over”.

Pelden Wangchuk who is studying in Bangalore, said that he came to watch the tournament in the new YDF complex because, “earlier the tournament was held in Swimming Pool Basketball court and the court was old so I came to check in for the new court”.

The players are mostly private employees and some students. 19 men’s teams and 4 ladies teams are participating.
