19 December 2008
The Merlins relinquished a 25- point halftime lead to lose the men’s final of the Coronation and Centenary Basketball Tournament, 72- 68, to the Pazaaps on December 17.
In the women’s final, which was also played at the Youth Development complex, Mystique beat the Flames.
A total of 24 teams took part in the tournament.
While the winning teams won individual medals, certificates and attractive prizes including TashiCell recharge vouchers, the Most Valuable Player (MVP) among the men was awarded a laptop.
The coveted MVP prize went to Tenzin of the team, Pazaaps. Pem Chuki of Mystique took the women’s MVP and a neat cash prize.
But where there are winners there are also losers.
Pema Khenrab, an employee of Bhutan National Bank Limited (BNBL), who was the manager of team Kathraps, said, “We had hoped to reach the final because we had a good team, but unfortunately we lost by half a basket (one point) against Aspen.”
He said that he felt happy to have played in the tournament because it reminded him of college days. He plans to play in the next tournament in which he intends to play better.
Gelden, a Pazaaps player, said that he was glad that he had got the opportunity to participate in the tournament, an experience that he summed up in simple terms. “We had a good team, we reached the final and we won the game,” he said.
The tournament, which was played between December 6 and December 17, was organized by LD Technology in collaboration with the Youth Development Fund and was sponsored by BNBL, Bhutan Post and Tashi Cell.
