The best golfer at the India House annual golf tournament will, for the first time, be awarded a prestigious new trophy this year- the Nehru-Wangchuck Cup, a non-rolling trophy. The tournament will be played between November 26 and 30.
The Secretary of the tournament said, this year the new trophy would be awarded in celebration of the centenary year of the monarchy, the coronation of His Majesty the King and the golden jubilee of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s visit to Bhutan. The prizes at this year’s edition of the tournament are bigger and better in terms of number and value, he said, because this year was very important to the Bhutanese and the Indian embassy wanted to make the tournament more significant and attractive.
The champion of this year’s tournament will take home a Maruti Zen Estilo car. The runners-up will take a digital SLR camera. The winner in the lady’s category will take away a Tissot watch. There will be other attractive prizes. The tournament is expected to be the biggest event in the history of golf in Bhutan. It was learned that the total value of the prizes awarded this year is worth over Nu. 600,000. This is the biggest prize the India House Golf tournament is giving away since it started in 1995.
At this time of reporting, two days after the registration was open, over 40 golfers had registered. Last year, 146 golfers took part in the tournament.
It was reported that at the initiative of the Ambassador, who is also the chief patron of the tournament, youth are allowed to practice at the golf course so that they are prepared to face the more seasoned golfers during the tournament. This was also initiated to expose talent among the againyouth.Over a dozen young golfers have already started practising.
Since 1995, the India House golf Tournament was played to commemorate the birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. This year, the tournament was postponed so as to give opportunity to those who were engaged in the coronation celebrations.
“The comfort of the golfers will not be scarified with the cold and chilly winter,” an organiser said.
The tournament will be played at the reputedly challenging India house golf course within the India house estate. Karma Wangchuck, 18, a former caddy, won last year’s tournament.
